Carilion Clinic officials on Tuesday celebrated opening the new Crystal Spring Tower in south 麻花视频.
The 12-story, 500,000-square-foot addition to Carilion 麻花视频 Memorial Hospital cost $500 million. It鈥檚 been years in the making, said CEO Steve Arner.

鈥淭his concept of having an addition to 麻花视频 Memorial started almost a decade ago, but truly got underway about six years ago,鈥 Arner said. 鈥淲e open this building to sophisticated care that our region needs and deserves.鈥
Carilion President Mike Abbott said the tower is designed 鈥渢o deliver the most advanced heart, vascular and emergency care to patients in our region.鈥
鈥淭hinking another 30 years ahead, we consider not just what the latest technology is today, but what it will be,鈥 Abbott said. 鈥淲e have flexible space to adopt to new and changing technology.鈥

Vice President of Cardiovascular Services Marguerite Underwood said it鈥檚 a 鈥渉ospital of the future,鈥 with cutting-edge technology to care for patients鈥 hearts. The Cardiovascular Institute is still moving into the new space, and will open there in mid-July, officials said.
鈥淭his month marks the 43rd anniversary of our cardiac surgery program, and we have performed over 30,000 surgeries,鈥 Underwood said. 鈥淭hat represents so many success stories. Patients who, due to the extraordinary care provided by our cardiac surgery team, have gone on to celebrate milestones like birthdays, graduations and weddings.鈥

The new tower will allow more collaboration between specialties within the Cardiovascular Institute, said Dr. Josh Adams, chief of aortic and endovascular surgery.
鈥淚t will bring access to research, professional education, and training, which allows us to compete at the highest level with other academic medical centers across the country,鈥 Adams said. 鈥淲e truly could not be more excited about the move to the Crystal Spring Tower, and the limitless potential it brings for the future of our CVI programs.鈥

Also included with the facility are new trauma treatment bays, expanding capacity at the region鈥檚 only level one trauma center for both adults and children, said Wrenn Brendel, vice president of emergency medicine. The emergency department opened last month.
鈥淢edical and surgical specialists across a wide range of disciplines are available within minutes around the clock, ready to care for our most critically ill patients,鈥 Brendel said. 鈥淚 hope that you never need us. But if you do, know that we鈥檒l be here for you, your family, your friends and all of your loved ones.鈥
The emergency department is on track to see almost 90,000 patients this year, Brendel said. People come not just from Southwest Virginia, but also North Carolina, West Virginia and Tennessee.

麻花视频 Hospital first opened almost 125 years ago to the day, on the same site that now hosts 麻花视频 Memorial, said Abbott, the Carilion president.
