Actress Maggie Q says she鈥檒l watch a serial killer documentary just before bedtime.
Consider it an occupational hazard.

Maggie Q plays Renee Ballard in "Ballard," a drama about detectives investigating cold cases in Los Angeles.
In the new series, 鈥淏allard,鈥 she plays a detective who鈥檚 put in charge of the underfunded cold case division of the Los Angeles Police Department. As she pulls back the layers of crime, Renee Ballard uncovers a conspiracy within the department. With the help of volunteers (and retired detective Harry Bosch, from the hit series 鈥淏osch鈥), she discovers plenty.
鈥淚 like justice personally,鈥 Q says prior to the series鈥 start. 鈥淚鈥檝e had several (cold cases) in my life and we don鈥檛 know what happened 鈥 or we do and the person was never brought to justice. That鈥檚 not fun, but I can鈥檛 imagine the pressure to bring justice to these families.鈥
Co-star John Carroll Lynch says detectives who track cold cases often have a sense of longing and loss, too. 鈥淥ne of our technical advisers said he opened up one of the books and found a note inside that said, 鈥業f you ever find out who did this, call me.鈥 He had worked the case for a decade and retired while it still was open. That desire for closure was still there. He wanted it closed.鈥

In the series, Lynch plays a retired police partner who comes back to help Ballard run the department. Unlike Q, Lynch doesn鈥檛 have to run through the streets of L.A. or try to subdue suspects.
鈥淢ostly, my action is bringing donuts,鈥 he says with a smile.

Courtney Taylor, left, and Maggie Q join forces to solve cold cases in "Ballard."
Q, however, does get her share of action scenes.
鈥淭he action in this series is very organic to cop work 鈥 it鈥檚 not a Marvel franchise,鈥 she says. 鈥淵eah, it hurts. But it鈥檚 grounded in the storytelling. I鈥檝e been in things where action was very gratuitous, and it was the bane of my existence. But this stuff (comes from the story). The stunt coordinator makes it as least painful as possible.鈥
Already, she says, she hurt her hand, 鈥渂ut it鈥檚 stuff you can avoid. I should have pulled it out quicker. When you鈥檙e in a scene like that and you鈥檙e doing it, the adrenaline is there, right? It鈥檚 supposed to be real-life violence that somebody would experience if this thing was happening to them in that moment and you can鈥檛 really hold back because the audience will know. That鈥檚 the kind of sacrifice you have to make. I come from film, and I give film effort, even in TV, and I think it鈥檚 probably my downfall.鈥

Like Lynch, Courtney Taylor is part of the team helping Ballard solve cases.
The minute she got an audition for the series 鈥 a part of the 鈥淏osch鈥 universe 鈥 Taylor dug into the Michael Connelly books and was hooked. 鈥淗e has such a way with creating a world that I felt like I was in it.鈥
Lynch鈥檚 brother is a big fan, too, and 鈥渞ead every Michael Connelly book.鈥

He asked the 鈥淔argo鈥 actor which role he was going to play and when Lynch told him, he said, 鈥淗e鈥檚 not in the books.鈥
Now, the three are steeped in the cold case world, eager to figure out whodunnit.
鈥淒etectives, Angela Lansbury 鈥 all those people who were just sleuths trying to figure things out I find fascinating,鈥 Q says. 鈥淢ystery 鈥 I love it, absolutely.鈥
鈥淏allard鈥 begins July 9 on Prime Video. It鈥檚 the third installment in Connelly鈥檚 鈥淏osch鈥 universe. 鈥淏osch鈥 started the run in 2014. It was followed by 鈥淏osch: Legacy in 2022. And, now, there鈥檚 鈥淏allard.鈥 Titus Welliver, who played Harry Bosch, makes guest appearances in the new series.

There could be more to the cold cases she's asked to investigate in "Ballard." A darker side to the Los Angeles Police Department could be lurking. Maggie Q stars as Renee Ballard.
