BLACKSBURG 鈥 Virginia Tech football coach Brent Pry said he was surprised but not concerned by the tampering allegation that North Carolina Central coach Trei Oliver leveled against the Hokies.
Pry, speaking with the media after Thursday鈥檚 practice, added he was confident in the university's vetting of the allegation Oliver made last week that a Virginia Tech staff member was on the sidelines for an N.C. Central home game to improperly lure running back J鈥橫ari Taylor into the transfer portal.
鈥淥bviously I was surprised by the comment, but the university, they vetted it, they did their research, and I feel confident in the process and where we鈥檙e at with things,鈥 Pry said.
Oliver made the allegation during The Bill Dooley Pigskin Preview event in Raleigh last Friday.
He was asked if it was a staff member from Virginia Tech who was on the sidelines. "Yes, it was a staff member, yes,鈥 he answered. 鈥淎 former staff member that was at the University of North Carolina."

Oliver didn't provide a name of the Virginia Tech staff member who allegedly tampered with his player, and no Virginia Tech assistant coach previously served on the UNC staff.
Taylor later signed with Virginia. Oliver said Taylor received $400,000 to go to UVa.
Pry said he was not aware of any disciplinary action regarding the allegation.
鈥淚 know that our university vets those types of things very seriously and takes them very seriously,鈥 Pry said.

Virginia Tech football coach, seen before the program's spring game on April 12, said he was not concerned about the tampering allegation that was made against the Hokies by a North Carolina Central coach.
Drones back
Pry said last week at ACC football media days that quarterback Kyron Drones had his best practice of the spring before he had surgery for a stress fracture in his left foot.
Drones picked up where he left off during the first practice of training camp.
鈥淚 thought Kyron looked really rhythmic and consistent today,鈥 Pry said. 鈥淗e operated the offense fast and efficient. I wasn鈥檛 sure he鈥檇 come out on Day 1 and do that, with the defense lined up and things full tilt, but he did. He looked really sharp today.鈥
Pry said Drones wanted to get as much work in with the first-team offense as possible after missing out on six to seven practices in the spring.
Drones mentioned last week that he was motivated by how he felt like he was improving before he sustained multiple injuries that ended his season.
鈥淗e absolutely is disappointed in how he played at times,鈥 Pry said. 鈥淗e鈥檚 absolutely disappointed that the injury bug got him and he couldn鈥檛 finish the year the right way.鈥
Position shifts
The Hokies opened camp with three players at new positions.
Jordan Bass and Brennan Johnson moved to safety and Noah Jenkins is now at linebacker.
Bass was injured and did not participate in spring practices and Johnson was a summer enrollee.
鈥淲e evaluated those guys all summer. Jordan wasn鈥檛 able to do a whole lot in the spring, but enough to say he鈥檚 got some safety qualities,鈥 Pry said. 鈥淎nd then once Brennan Johnson got here this summer, you watch him work, you felt like he had the ability to do it. His size is a little bit of a liability at linebacker. You put it back at safety, it鈥檚 not. And he鈥檚 got really good instincts.鈥
Bass had season-ending surgery in his final season at Pittsburgh and has a redshirt season available.
鈥淗e鈥檚 progressed very well,鈥 Pry said. 鈥淭hat may or may not be a possibility. We鈥檒l see how these next couple of weeks go if we鈥檒l factor him in or not.鈥
Jenkins worked at safety last season.
鈥淗e showed us some things in bowl prep in the boundary, less space, and he鈥檇 be physical and had a good nose for the ball,鈥 Pry said. 鈥淎ll of a sudden, we all went, 鈥楬e鈥檚 got a lot of linebacker traits.鈥 He doesn鈥檛 run like some of them other safeties, but at linebacker, he runs well.鈥
Camp structure
Pry is maintaining the same training camp structure that he鈥檚 utilized in recent seasons with multiple mini-camps. The Hokies will have three straight days of practice followed by one day of meetings.
鈥淲e鈥檝e got four or five of those mini-camps that we鈥檒l work through,鈥 Pry said.
The players will wear helmets during the second practice, have shoulder pads and helmets for the third through fifth practices, and then be in full pads by the sixth practice.
