After completing her undergraduate degree at Christopher Newport University, Taylor Davis is planning on attending law school with the goal of eventually becoming a judge.
She would be the first recipient of the Don Holliday Memorial Scholarship to take up such a vocation, as the Salem High School senior was announced as the recipient of this year鈥檚 award Wednesday morning at 麻花视频 Country Club, the day before her 18th birthday.
鈥淚 didn鈥檛 think that I would win this, but I feel so blessed to have won, just because I knew that trying to pay for college, it鈥檚 something that we were trying to figure out how we were going to do it,鈥 Davis told reporters. 鈥淪o to win this is just insane.鈥

As the recipient of the award, given annually to a boy or girl from Southwest Virginia with an interest in golf, Davis will receive $30,000 in scholarship money, doled out over four years. She also garnered a $1,000 scholarship from the 麻花视频 Valley Women鈥檚 Golf Association, revealed along with the other recipients of the 麻花视频 Valley Golf Hall of Fame scholarship winners.

Davis, who has been playing golf in the valley for the last decade, was a four-year starter at Salem High School and served as the Spartans鈥 lone competitor in the VHSL girls open state championship in October. She鈥檚 maintained a 4.4 GPA in the classroom, is a three-year member of the National Honor Society and participates in the Spanish club and student council.
She plans to continue her golf career at Christopher Newport University, a Division III school.
鈥淚t鈥檚 really awesome to know that there鈥檚 this group of people who want to give back to the high school students who are out here just playing golf and everything, and having fun,鈥 she said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 a really great feeling to know there鈥檚 people who really care about junior golf in the 麻花视频 Valley.鈥

Davis is just the second Salem High School student to receive the Don Holliday Memorial Scholarship and the first since Travis Light in 2004. She鈥檚 the sixth girl to earn the award in its 38-year history and the first since Staunton River鈥檚 Cassidy Chambers in 2018.
鈥淚t鈥檚 been a bittersweet time of reflecting on 12 years in one school division, so to be the person to bring this scholarship back to Salem is really cool,鈥 Davis said. 鈥淲e get to highlight the Salem community here with this too and show how our school can accomplish things and people from our school can do great things.鈥
