Ryan Odom speaks on stage at the University of Virginia's press conference to announce Odom as the new Head Coach for the Men's Basketball Team at John Paul Jones Arena on Monday, March 24, 2025.
The Cavaliers and Odom agreed to a six-year deal running through the 2030-31 season, according to the offer sheet Odom signed last week. The Daily Progress obtained a copy of the document through the Freedom of Information Act on Tuesday.
Odom will make $3.25 million this coming season and his total compensation will increase by $100,000 annually.
The payment of the contract is broken into three parts — $500,000 base salary, $1.75 million in supplemental compensation and $1 million in licensing pay. The yearly $100,000 increase will count toward supplemental compensation.
He also is being given $25,000 in moving expenses.
Odom can earn plenty more in bonuses, including $50,000 for an ACC championship, $50,000 for an NCAA tournament appearance, $75,000 for reaching the Sweet 16, $100,000 for getting to the Elite Eight, $250,000 for the Final Four and another $250,000 for a national title.
He can also earn $50,000 if he’s the ACC Coach the Year and $75,000 if he’s the national coach of the year.
UVa is his fifth stop as a full-time head coach. Odom worked a year at Division II Lenoir-Rhyne, spent five seasons at UMBC, two in charge at Utah State and the last two most recently at VCU.

CAL CARY, THE DAILY PROGRESS
Odom’s offer sheet indicates that UVa will pay his $1 million buyout owed to VCU directly.
If Odom leaves the Cavaliers before this contract expires, he’ll owe $15 million in the first two years, $10 million in years three and four, $7.5 million in year five and $5 million in year six.
If he’s terminated without cause, UVa will owe him 100% of what’s due to him if he’s let go at any point in his first five seasons and 60% of his remaining salary if he’s fired in his final year.
