A coaching change inevitably brings roster change.
And on March 22, Virginia announced the hiring of former VCU coach Ryan Odom, ending a five-month search to find a permanent replacement for former coach Tony Bennett.
Ron Sanchez served as interim coach this past season on the heels of former Bennett鈥檚 retirement, but UVa did not retain Sanchez. As a result, members of the 2024-25 Cavaliers have started their move away from the program.

Odom has used the transfer portal plenty in his past stops, and it is fair to anticipate he will use it heavily again to fill out his first UVa roster.

This past season for the Dons, he averaged 19.9 points, 3.9 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game.
The 6-foot-5, 205-pounder was an All-West Coast Conference first-team selection. He performed well against non-conference competition, too. Notably, Thomas scored 25 points against Memphis and 14 against Clemson.
In the WCC, he had 25 points at Gonzaga during the regular season and then 27 against Gonzaga in the WCC tournament.
Thomas began his career at Southern California and spent two seasons there before transferring to San Francisco.

Onyenso was a former four-star recruit as a high schooler out of Putnam Science Academy in Connecticut.
With Kentucky in 2023-24, he averaged 3.6 points and 4.8 boards per game.
Ishan Sharma, G
On Wednesday (April 16), former UVa guard Ishan Sharma committed to St. Louis, CBS Sports first reported. He had entered the portal on March 27.
During his freshman season with the Cavaliers, Sharma, a Milton, Ontario native, played in 29 of the Cavaliers' 32 games and made one start. He averaged 3.4 points and 1.3 rebounds per game.
Sharma arrived in Charlottesville with a reputation as a high-level perimeter shooter and he showed that in spurts this season. He hit four 3-pointers in a win over Bethune-Cookman in December and sank three triples in a loss at Cal in January.
The 6-foot-5 guard did not get to the free-throw line much this season, but when he did, he was successful, finishing the season 15-for-16 (94%) from the charity stripe.
TJ Power, G/F
Former UVa wing TJ Power committed to Penn on Saturday (April 12), CBS Sports first reported. He entered the portal on March 24.
The former five-star prospect initially went to Duke out of high school, but departed the Blue Devils after his freshman year in order to move onto UVa.
He started the first five games of the 2024-25 campaign, and then his role diminished. He averaged 1.3 points and 1 rebound per game with the Cavaliers.
Elijah Saunders, F
Elijah Saunders will be back at John Paul Jones Arena this coming season, but not as a member of the Cavaliers.聽
On Saturday (April 12), Elijah Saunders announced his commitment to Maryland via social media. The Hoos are scheduled to host the Terrapins this coming season in the start of a four-year non-conference series.

Virginia鈥檚 Elijah Saunders shoots the ball during a game against Clemson at John Paul Jones Arena.
Saunders, who joined the UVa program this past season after transferring from San Diego State, was one of the Cavaliers' most productive players this past season, averaging 10.4 points and five rebounds per game. He played in 29 of the Cavaliers' 32 games during the 2024-25 season and was in the starting lineup in 26 of those matchups. He missed three games with a foot injury.
Saunders was in attendance at new Virginia coach Ryan Odom's introductory press conference on March 24. He was among the first players to arrive at the event at John Paul Jones Arena.
But he entered the transfer portal on April 3.
Devin Tillis, F
There鈥檚 a clear connection between the Cavaliers鈥 latest transfer commit and the Hoos鈥 new coaching staff.
On Friday (April 11), former UC Irvine forward Devin Tillis announced his decision to pledge to UVa via social media. Tillis, a 6-foot-7, 225-pounder, played the last three seasons for Anteaters coach Russell Turner, who was a college teammate of both Cavaliers coach Ryan Odom and associate head coach Griff Aldrich at Hampden-Sydney. Turner also worked for Odom鈥檚 father, Dave Odom, at Wake Forest.

UC Irvine forward Devin Tillis (11) gets back on defense against Oregon during the first half of an NCAA college basketball game Friday, Nov. 11, 2022, in Eugene, Ore.
Under Turner鈥檚 watch at UC Irvine, Tillis averaged 10.4 points per game. This past season was his most productive, though, while averaging 13.7 points and 7.8 rebounds per contest.
He was excellent in UC Irvine鈥檚 run to the NIT championship game this past postseason, too. He had 19 points in the Anteaters鈥 title game loss to Chattanooga. Tillis tallied 16 points in the semifinals against North Texas and 22 in the quarterfinals to lift UC Irvine past UAB.
Tillis began his career at UNLV and played one season there before transferring to UC Irvine.
Duke Miles, G
Less than five days after committing to Virginia, former Oklahoma guard Duke Miles decommitted from the Cavaliers on Friday (April 11), The Athletic first reported.
UVa was set to be the fourth stop for the 6-foot-2, 188-pound veteran who made his pledge on Monday (April 7). He began his career with three seasons at Troy and played a year with High Point before spending this past season with the Sooners.

At Oklahoma, Miles averaged 9.4 points per game to go along with 2.5 rebounds and two assists per contests. He was the Big South Newcomer of the Year and an All-Big South first-team selection during the previous campaign at High Point where he averaged 17.5 points per game.
Dallin Hall, G
UVa鈥檚 new coaching staff had a first-hand scouting opportunity just last month of the Cavaliers鈥 latest addition.
On Wednesday (April 9) former BYU guard Dallin Hall announced his commitment to the Hoos via social media. A few weeks ago, Hall had six points and four assists in the Cougars鈥 NCAA tournament win in Denver over VCU, which formerly employed UVa coach Ryan Odom and the bulk of his Cavaliers assistants.

BYU guard Dallin Hall celebrates after making a 3-point basket during the second half of an NCAA college basketball game against Iowa State, Tuesday, March 4, 2025, in Ames, Iowa.
Over three seasons with BYU, Hall played in 100 games with 61 starts while averaging 7.7 points and 2.5 assists per contest. This past campaign, he averaged 6.8 points and had nine double-figure scoring efforts, including a 22-point effort in BYU鈥檚 March 4 win at Iowa State.
His most productive season, though, came in 2023-24 when he averaged 9 points per bout.
Hall is the fifth transfer pledge in the class and the fourth guard in the group.
Martin Carrere, F

Martin Carrere
The Cavaliers landed their first frontcourt player of the offseason on Wednesday (April 9) with the transfer addition of former VCU forward Martin Carrere, who is following new Hoos coach Ryan Odom and his staff to Charlottesville.
Carrere announced his decision to commit to UVa via social media.
The 6-foot-8, 180-pound native of France, redshirted this past season and has four years eligibility to play with the Cavaliers.
Before arriving at VCU, Carrere played for Limoges CSP Elite, a professional club, as well as France鈥檚 18U national team. At the 18U FIBA EuroBasket tournament last summer for France, he averaged 6.7 points per game and shot 41.9% (13-of-31) from 3-point range. He had 11 points and grabbed five rebounds against Denmark in the event.
Jacari White, G
That鈥檚 two transfer commitments for Ryan Odom in the last 24 hours.
On Sunday (April 6), former North Dakota State guard Jacari White committed to the Cavaliers, he announced on social media.
He averaged 17.1 points per game for the Bison this past season while earning a spot on the All-Summit League second team.

North Dakota State guard Jacari White shoots during the second half of an NCAA college basketball game against Kansas on Thursday, Nov. 10, 2022, in Lawrence, Kan. Kansas won 82-59.
White has played in 94 career games and started 61 of them. His production has increased each season, too, having averaged 7.5 points per contest as a freshman in 2022-23 and 10.3 points per game in 2023-24.
The 6-foot-3, 180-pounder can shoot it from long range. For his career, he鈥檚 a 40.6% shooter from beyond the arc. He made 88 3s while shooting at a 39.8% clip this past campaign.
White will join former Toledo guard Sam Lewis at UVa. Lewis committed to the Cavaliers on Saturday.
Sam Lewis, G
Virginia has its first transfer commit of the Ryan Odom era.
On Saturday (April 5), former Toledo guard Sam Lewis pledged to the Hoos, Field of 68 first reported.

The 6-foot-6, 210-pound native of Chicago was a second-team All-MAC selection this past season. He started all 33 games for the Rockets and averaged 16.2 points per game. He scored in double figures in 31 contests, and played well, too, against Toledo鈥檚 high-major competition. In December, Lewis had 14 points against Houston and 13 points against Purdue.
Jacob Cofie, F
On Saturday (April 5), Jacob Cofie committed to USC, On3 first reported. He became the sixth member of this past season鈥檚 version of the Cavaliers to find a new program to play for.
Cofie entered the transfer portal last week.
He impressed early in his freshman campaign this past season at UVa, tallying double-figure scoring totals in each of the first three games of the year. During that stretch, his 12 points and six rebounds helped the Hoos knock off Villanova in Baltimore. His continued strong efforts earned him a spot in the starting lineup by mid-December after he registered a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds in the Cavaliers鈥 win over Bethune-Cookman.
The Seattle native鈥檚 production and playing time dipped, though, during the middle of the ACC schedule and eventually he was demoted back to the bench in late February.
Still, the 6-foot-10, 232-pounder鈥檚 has plenty of potential and displayed his ability to bounce back after experiencing those first-year struggles.
Cofie capped his freshman season in the final two games with 13 points and four rebounds at Syracuse and nine points and five rebounds against Georgia Tech in the second round of the ACC tournament.
Anthony Robinson, F
In the back half of this past season, forward Anthony Robinson was one of the bright spots for UVa.
But he鈥檚 on the move, too, as of Friday (April 4). Robinson committed to Xavier, On3 first reported.
The 6-foot-10, 250-pounder redshirted in 2023-24, and then his role increased as the 2024-25 campaign unfolded.
Robinson had 15 points, seven rebounds and two blocks in UVa鈥檚 at rival Virginia Tech in February. He had nine points and six rebounds to help the Hoos win at Pittsburgh that same month.
But Robinson entered the transfer portal on March 24, ending his career with the Hoos.
Andrew Rohde, G
Virginia guard Andrew Rohde was one of the most improved players in the Atlantic Coast Conference this past season.
But he won鈥檛 be spending a third year with the Cavaliers.
On Thursday (April 3), Rohde committed to Wisconsin, On3 first reported. Rohde, a native of Milwaukee, is heading back to his home state. He originally entered the portal on March 24.
He was fifth in the ACC in assist-to-turnover ratio (2.35) this past season as he adapted to being the Hoos鈥 primary point guard.
Rohde averaged 9.3 points and 4.6 assists per game in 2024-25, and both numbers were up from the 4.3 points and 2.7 assists per contest he averaged in his first with UVa after joining the Cavaliers as a transfer from St. Thomas (Minn.).
In his final home game at John Paul Jones Arena, Rohde鈥檚 desperation 3 in the final minute against Florida State lifted the Hoos past the Seminoles.
Isaac McKneely, G
On Thursday (April 3), Isaac McKneely announced his decision to commit to Louisville via social media. He initially entered the transfer portal on March 24.
This past season, he was an All-ACC honorable mention selection. McKneely led the Cavaliers with 14.4 points per game and his 42.1% clip from 3-point range paced the ACC.
The 6-foot-4 guard was excellent all the way through the end of this past season. He had 27 points and made a career-best seven 3-pointers in UVa鈥檚 season-ending loss to Georgia Tech in the ACC tournament on March 12.
Throughout the year, the Poca, W.Va. native, scored at least 20 points in eight games.
His move comes on the heels of a challenging year for the Cavaliers, though. Tony Bennett, the coach McKneely thought he鈥檇 be playing for throughout his career, retired. The Cavaliers elevated Ron Sanchez to interim coach and McKneely did his best to help Sanchez through a campaign in which the Hoos went 15-17 for their first sub-.500 finish since Bennett鈥檚 first year in charge.
In February, McKneely said he wanted the Cavaliers to keep Sanchez in place. But, UVa decided not to retain Sanchez and to open up the job.
UVa made the NCAA tournament in each of McKneely鈥檚 first two seasons at the school. He averaged 12.3 points per game last year in his first as a full-time starter and 6.7 points per game as a freshman off the bench the year before.
Dai Dai Ames, G
Former Virginia guard Dai Dai Ames is changing coasts, but staying in the ACC. On Tuesday (April 1), Ames committed to Cal, On3 first reported.
Ames entered the transfer portal last week.
He joined UVa this past season after beginning his career at Kansas State. And during the second half of the campaign with the Hoos, he flourished under the watch of Sanchez. Ames tallied double-figure scoring totals in each of the final 10 games of the regular season while averaging 14.8 points per game during that stretch.
The native of Chicago had a career-high 27 points in the Cavaliers鈥 win at Pittsburgh on Feb. 3. For the season, Ames shot 41.9% from 3-point range.
At Cal, Ames will play for third-year Bears coach Mark Madsen, who guided Cal to a 14-19 mark this past season and a 6-14 record in its first year in the ACC.聽
Blake Buchanan, F
Forward Blake Buchanan committed to Iowa State on Sunday (March 30), he announced on social media. He was the first from the 2024-25 Virginia roster to determine he would enter the transfer portal when it was reported on March 18 that he would do so.
Buchanan was also the first to find a landing spot.
The 6-foot-11 native of Idaho spent the last two seasons on UVa鈥檚 roster. He played in 66 contests and started 28 times, including 22 times this past winter as a sophomore when he averaged 5.4 points and 5.3 rebounds per game.
He had a memorable performance when he scored a career-high 18 points and grabbed seven rebounds in a win for the Cavaliers over Florida on Nov. 10, 2023 in Charlotte. Buchanan couldn鈥檛 replicate that kind of production, though. Buchanan reached double figures only six times in his two-year stint with the Hoos.
Christian Bliss, G
On Thursday (March 27), guard Christian Bliss entered the transfer portal, On3 first reported.
Bliss has been in the Virginia men's basketball program for two seasons but has yet to play in a game for the Cavaliers. Bliss, a native of Queens, New York, redshirted during the 2023-24 season.
Bliss did not play this season while dealing with a foot injury, which means he could potentially have four years of eligibility remaining if he has able to get a medical redshirt from the NCAA.
At times this season, Bliss' injury status was a point of frustration for UVa fans. In January, then-interim coach Ron Sanchez said that Bliss was practicing but was not feeling comfortable enough to play in a game.
鈥淭hat鈥檚 a player decision,鈥 Sanchez said at the time. 鈥淎nd we as coaches aren鈥檛 going to force him to get out there.鈥
